Our resident craft beer guru, Brad Kingsman, shares 5 Out-Of-This-World Craft Beers packed with wild and wondrous flavours that are guaranteed to give your taste buds a thrill.

1. The Bruery Terreux Tart Of Darkness
This incredible sour stout was dreamt up by the folks at Bruery Terreux®, a boutique brewery located in Orange County, California specialising in farmhouse-style wild and sour ales.

Tart of Darkness is a traditional stout that has been aged in used oak barrels from The Bruery that had previously housed beers such as Cuivre™ or Black Tuesday®. They then brought them over to Bruery Terreux, added their special blend of souring bacterias and wild yeasts and watched nature take its course. The result is a perfectly tart yet awesomely dark and roasty, sour stout. Not a style you will see very often, and in Bruery Terreux’s opinion, not a style seen often enough. This unique stout has notes of tart plums, roasted coffee, vanilla and oak.


2. Big Shed Golden Stout Time
How could we not give a shout out to a beer that pays tribute to the iconic Golden Gaytime ice cream!? This sensational brew hails from Big Shed Brewing in South Australia.

It is brewed with cacao, nuts, rice and specialty grain for that honey aroma, then lactose for sweetness. Sweet aromas of honeycomb, chocolate and caramel waft from this dreamy beer. The body is silky smooth, like a decadent milkshake, and carries a flavoursome mixture of honeycomb, chocolate and caramel.


3. Epic The Observer Timeless Ale
New Zealand’s Epic Brewing Company has earned a reputation for producing exciting, inventive beers that really push the boundaries.

This beauty is no exception, The Observer Timeless Ale has an obvious peaty smokey character. Yet it’s not overwhelming at all, and you quickly realise how complex this beer is with all the specialty malts working together in harmony. Rich and warming, the ingredients are a marriage of the best quality English pale ale and special crystal and roasted malts, with the magic coming from the heavily heated distilling malt from Scotland.


4. Killer Sprocket Bandit Peated Pale Ale
Melbourne-based, Killer Sprocket was founded by Sean and Andrea Ryan. Many of their recipes have been developed through years of home-brewing and reflect their passion for full flavoured ales.

Killer Sprocket Bandit pours a slightly hazy red-copper with a thin, quickly-dissipating head. On the nose you get a medley of biscuit, dark fruit, toffee, spice and smoke. Its flavours invoke a combination of German Rauchbier and Pilsner styles, malty and spicy, and with a smoky finish, denoting the distinct presence of peated malt.


5. Noisy Minor Admiral Ackbar Anti-Imperial Red
A beer with a cool Star Wars reference clearly deserves to be on this list! Brewed in the Gold Coast Hinterland by the Noisy Minor Brewing Co, this is a big warming malty ale with a tonne of Nelson Sauvin and Citra Hops.

The Crafty Pint describes it as, “a ruby chestnut affair that showcases rich toffee, treacle and sweet, nutty malts, supported by some balancing citrusy hops. It’s dangerously well judged, the 8.5 per cent alcohol so well hidden you can’t help wonder, like Admiral Ackbar himself, if it is indeed a trap.”
