Beer with the Brewer — Bright Brewery

We sat down with a beer with...

Lewis “The Big Lew” Kerr

Bright Brewery

We recently caught up with Bright Brewery Head Brewer, Lewis “The Big Lew” Kerr. We chat origins of the brewery, future of craft, and learn what’s inside a brewer’s fridge at home!

1. How was the brewery named?

Bright Brewery was named due to being located in Bright. It’s the home of our venue and our production facility, and home base for many of the action sports and activities we all like to get up to in our spare time.

2. What beers do you have at home in your fridge now?

Bridge Road Shrooms of Doom, Bojak Calypso, Good Land Lager and our new 2.9% Any Day XPA

3. Best tip for visiting the brewery?

Come and visit in Autumn! There is fewer crowds, the weather is sensational, hop harvest is in full bloom in the region and there is a constant stream of fun events at the venue. We are also the closest brewery to the HPA hop fields and the harvest will be in full swing, creating a buzz around town and a whole load of fresh hopped beers from local producers.

4. Pineapple on pizza, YES or NO?

Absolutely. Pineapple on anything as far as I am concerned.

5. If you can only use one hop for the rest of your life, what is it?

Probably Galaxy. It’s such a diverse local hop with a great foundation to build multiple styles off. A special mention also goes out to Simcoe.

6. If you could collaborate with one other brewery, who would you choose?

Probably Firestone Walker. I’ve long been a fan of their work and have taken a lot of inspiration from it over the years. It would be a blast to go over there and put through a brew!

7. Some occasions call for the ‘perfect’ beer, what are you reaching for:

  • a beach beer? A clean and crispy lager without too much hop loading or body.
  • an airport beer? A low/no alc if its a short flight, or a good sessionable mid strength pale/XPA for something a little longer.
  • the end of the day beer? The closest beer to me at the end of the day is the best beer at the end of the day!
  • the ‘best beer with dinner’ beer? Any IPA. I mean, IPA goes best with any meal of the day yeah?
  • to kick back and watch sport with? I love sitting down to watch the footy and working through a range of beers. It’s my time to really sit down and work through some new product testing and anything from spontaneously fermented wild sours to Mexican lagers could be on the menu in a single sitting.

8. What’s the future of craft and can Craft Cartel beer lovers get on board?

Craft is going through a bit of a tough time at the moment, but given the longevity and passion of our scene and supporters I’ve no doubt we will bounce back as an industry. The best thing beer lovers can do right now is to get down to your local independent brewer. Buy some beers over the bar, or grab some takeaways. Support independent bottle shops in person and online and spread the good word to your non-craft mates. Support those who support us.
